Mariupol is rightfully called “the sea gates of Donbass”. It is situated on the shores of Sea of Azov, at confluence of two small rivers Kalchik and Kalmius. It represents important transportation junction. Mariupol Sea Commercial Port is one of the biggest transportation enterprises of Ukraine. Shipping routes to all continents are laid from its berths. Mariupol residents have already got accustomed to distinctive marks of port city landscape: white-fronted liners approaching to the berth, train of port cranes and silhouettes of agglomerate–carriers on the edge of lilac skyline. Routes of railway and motor transport are meeting here. Steel-founder rising to his full height on concrete pedestal is greeting you at the entrance to the city: “Welcome to city of metallurgists!” After all, Mariupol is one of the biggest industrial centers of Ukraine. There are two giant metallurgical works – “Azovsteel” and Ilyich works, as well as heavy machine building plant “Azovmash”, which is one of the biggest plants in Ukraine. One of the features of Mariupol is participation of industrial enterprises – group of enterprises after Ilyich, “Azovsteel”, “Azovmash”, Mariupol Sea Commercial Port, “SRZ” ltd – in the development of city social sphere: repair of roads, schools, hospitals, construction of new objects and so on. Combination of bright colours of land and sea, natural resources and industrial power make the city unique and inimitable in its way. Along seashore health-resort area is spread out. Curative mud and warm sea are inexhaustible sources of health. Wide belt of sandy beaches is stretched from the city to east and west up to the fishing villages. In the most beautiful spots of seaside sanatoriums, rest homes, holiday hotels and children’s camps are located. And achievements of Mariupol residents in sport movement are highly noticeable. Sport is becoming a kind of cult both among children and adults. And they have to whom follow: football team “Ilyichevets” made its debut in League of Champions, basketball players of “Azovmash” are multiple champions of country, as well as water pole players. In 70 schools of city football teams are established. New stadiums are being built, including those with artificial roofing, cultural and sport complex for five thousand seats.
